ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions maintained their healthy position in the Cab Direct Championship table, by picking up an aggregate bonus point at Berwick last night (Saturday).

Berwick Bandits were rampant on the night, and charged to a 56-34 victory, but Scorpions defeated Berwick by 59-31 at the Eddie Wright Raceway on May 15.

Skipper Josh Pickering was once more to the fore for Scorpions, scoring 16 points and only dropping two points in six outings.

The contribution of reserve Nathan Ablitt was also vital. He scored 10+1, and Ablitt’s win in Heat 14 secured the bonus point for Scorpions.

Scorpions were under-strength, since Luke Harrison was on European Under-19 duty in Hungary. With a limited number of guests available, National League rider Alfie Bowtell filed the gap at No 3. Meanwhile, teenager Harrison scored 10 points in Debrecen, to qualify for the European Under-19 Final in Slovenia on September 5.

Scorpions have been reported in some places as being top of the Cab Direct Championship table. However, it is Glasgow who are top after a 51-39 victory at Workington yesterday afternoon. But Scunthorpe have leap-frogged defending champions Poole Pirates, and Scorpions are back in second place. Furthermore, Scorpions still have a run of home fixtures to come and are very well placed in terms of several aggregate bonus points, which bodes well for a place in the all-important end-of-season play-offs.
