Wayne Carter Speedway Training
Since 2007 former Scorpions’ Captain Wayne Carter has run regular training sessions/experience days on the club’s purpose-built 92-metre minitrack. Then from 2011 he started his regular training schools on the main track. Along with practices, amateur meetings and second halves it just means the Eddie Wright Raceway provides by far the most track opportunities for non-professional riders in the country.
At the bottom of this page there are details on the main track training schools but the next few sections will concentrate on the hugely popular minitrack sessions/experiences.
Minitrack training/experience days
Scunthorpe Speedway’s 92-metre mini-track was built inside the stadium grounds in the summer of 2007 and has proven to be an extremely popular addition.
Its size makes it ideal for the smaller-engined bikes (e.g. 125-150cc) and is an excellent introduction to the art of sliding. Already riders have progressed to the Premiership and Championship leagues, whilst many other users are fans of all ages and abilities, and from all over the country, who want to experience the sport in relative safety.
There are a variety of ways to ride the mini-track suitable for all ages and abilities.
Since the early days of the mini-track, former Scorpions captain Wayne Carter has run regular training sessions. These weekend sessions (usually Sundays – see dates below) are suitable for riders of all abilities and can be booked in advance using the online booking system.
For enquiries, contact Richard Hollingsworth by text (07832 402167) or email (scunnyraceway@gmail.com). Sessions are open to riders using their own bikes as well as those hiring club machines (125cc–150cc).
Pricing:
£95.00– includes tuition, bike hire, and equipment (helmet, boots, clothing)
£40.00 – riders using their own bike
Training sessions can be purchased as gift vouchers. Simply book a session through the website shop (card or PayPal), then contact Richard to request a voucher instead of the selected date. Vouchers have no expiry date.
Private group sessions are available for up to 12 riders at £800 for a four-hour session (time agreed in advance).
To secure a date, a £200 deposit is required via PayPal (scunnyraceway@gmail.com) or bank transfer (details available from Richard).
Please contact Richard first to arrange a suitable date, as public session dates cannot be used for group bookings.
What time should I arrive?
Please arrive 30 minutes before the session (usually 11:00am) to allow time for signing on and fitting equipment.
How do I pay?
Book and pay online via card or PayPal. Bank transfer can be arranged by contacting Richard.
What should I bring?
All riding kit is provided, but you may wish to wear a base layer you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring food and drink, as the café only opens when the main track is in use. In colder months, bring warm clothing for between sessions.
Can spectators attend?
Yes – spectators are welcome and may take photos or film.
What does the session involve?
Wayne assesses each rider individually, introduces the bikes, and provides initial guidance before allowing plenty of track time with ongoing coaching. Riders may try different bikes or stick with one.
What ages and abilities are catered for?
All ages and abilities are welcome. Young riders need a minimum inside leg measurement of 22 inches (56cm), although smaller pit bikes can be arranged in advance. Sessions regularly include complete beginners, fans, motocross riders, and experienced motorcyclists trying speedway for the first time.

These sessions are generally aimed at riders with some prior experience (usually on the mini-track under Wayne’s tuition). Fuel, oil, mechanical support, drinks, and snacks are provided.
I would like to say a big thank you to everybody involved on the day we attended the Wayne Carter Training School. Wayne and his team were top draw, and the other riders and parents were all so friendly and helped so much . We travelled a long way to attend this training school, a six hour trip each way but well worth every mile. The knowledge given on the day was so helpful to Jordan he had some good moments. A big thank you to Wayne, we will be back again.
I came to the mini track yesterday for the first time feeling a little apprehensive,I soon realised their was no need. I’m sure you’ve heard this many times before regarding Wayne and Jeff, but they are a credit to the set up. I had a great day dispite leaving a little battered and bruised, thanks again to all involved.
Just need to say a big thanks for Wayne’s training day. You know he really is good at teaching, and so much patience with everyone. I think your set up at Scunny is first class and I can’t thank you enough for letting us come along and join in, it’s like our second home now. I will hopefully be along to the next one on my own bike.
Just wanted to say we had a great day! Brett really enjoyed it. You were all very friendly & we thought it was so well organised. We’ll definitely be recommending it to our friends. Think he might be a bit sore in the morning though. Thanks again for an excellent day.
