Scunthorpe Speedway | Speedway & Stockcars | Eddie Wright Raceway
At Scunthorpe we now run 6 flat track meetings a year with a three round Spring Cup (typically in March, April and May) followed up by a three round Autumn Trophy later in the year (typically September, October and November). Between 2018 and 2023 there was also the Dirt Diggers weekend racing festival. That is taking a break in 2024 but hopefully it will return for future years.
Flat Track racing at Scunthorpe originally started with the Short Track UK championship around 2005 (around a year after the track was built). By 2013 flat track classes were regular inclusions in the club’s amateur speedway meetings and after Odgie Danaan and Richard Hollingsworth joined forces to organise the first Dirt Diggers festival in 2018 the number of classes and entries grew to the point where the flat track classes needed their own meetings.
At its heart the club’s philosophy is for everything they organise to be friendly and fun and they are particularly keen to welcome new racers to the flat track scene. Along with the custom-built flat track bikes (which now also has a vintage class) there are classes for MX/Dirt Bikes (which also has a vintage class), Street Trackers (Super Comp for the more modified), Pit Bikes, Minibikes, Inappropriates, Ladies and two youth classes. Here is Youtube clip to give you an idea of what we do https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=871wONObPjA
An up-to-date calendar of all amateur track activity at Scunthorpe – including flat track meetings and practice sessions (all of which welcome flat trackers) – is available on the website above.
Bookings should be made by contacting Richard Hollingsworth via email (scunnyraceway@gmail.com), text (07832 402167), Facebook Messenger, or through the Scunny Flat Track Facebook group. Club-run events must be paid for at least 24 hours in advance using the booking system. Payment arrangements for practices run by Wayne Carter and AMSA are different, so please contact the organiser directly – still Richard for Wayne’s sessions and Heather Beachill (07722 656105) for AMSA.
New riders should first contact Richard Hollingsworth to discuss their entry. Please be ready to confirm the bike you will ride, the class you wish to enter, and your preferred race number. For Super Comp, Street Tracker, or Inappropriate classes, a photo of the bike is required for approval. Richard can be contacted by email, text, or Messenger.
Lap scoring is done manually from the infield, so numbers must be clear and visible. At minimum they should be displayed on the front and left side of the bike; the right side and the rider’s back are also very helpful.
If you use Facebook, joining the Scunthorpe Flat Track group is strongly recommended. Fixtures, booking lists, weather updates, and general information are posted there. It’s a welcoming, grassroots community and a good place to ask questions. The announcements section includes useful information such as where to buy steel shoes, and tyre discussions are common.
Meetings currently run under SCB regulations. The licence year runs from 1 March to the end of February, and riders may use up to three free day permits. Anyone riding more than three times per year will need an ACU licence of any type. Riders without an ACU licence can purchase an amateur speedway licence (previously £20). Licences are available at www.ride-acu.uk.
We run a three-round Spring Cup (March–May) and an Autumn Trophy series (September–November). All races count equally towards the championship. The final race of each round is a trophy final for the top three in each class. Fixtures are listed on the Facebook group and on this page.
Although booking and payment must be completed in advance (usually by 5pm the evening before), riders must sign in on the day between 9:30am and 10:30am, usually with Anne at the office at the end of the pits. Please provide your ACU licence number if you have one. You will then receive a race sheet showing your race numbers and grid positions.
The next race number is displayed near the pit gate. Please be ready in good time and line up on your allocated grid position when called. Once the pit gate closes, the number will change to the next race. Being prepared keeps the meeting running on schedule.
All classes use a three-row grid of five riders. Positions 1–5 are the front row (inside to outside), 6–10 the second row, and 11–15 the back row. You may start anywhere within the front line of your grid box (approximately 3 metres wide). Not all rows are used in every race, depending on entries.
Riders must remain stationary until the tapes rise. Any movement risks being placed last. If you roll forward, drop back to remove any advantage before continuing.
Riders who cause a stoppage will be excluded from scoring points in the rerun, although they may still take part. If blame cannot be determined, all riders will be allowed to score. These meetings are intended to be fun and respectful; dangerous riding will not be tolerated.
A helmet to ECE, DOT, or equivalent standard is required (full-face recommended), with goggles or visor. Riders must wear sturdy trousers and jacket, gloves, and boots covering the ankle. Body armour is strongly recommended.
Bikes must have:
Self-closing throttle
Mirrors removed
Lights taped or removed
Folding or rubber-covered footrests
Working rear brake (front brake lever removed is recommended)
No protruding parts
Wheel infill for wheels with six spokes or fewer
Rear chain guard (“shark fin”)
Lanyard cut-out kill switch (newcomers may be given temporary dispensation)
The track is available for private hire with a sliding scale. Groups of up to ten riders can hire the circuit from £450. See the Private Hire page for full details.
