Big Match Preview: Scunthorpe v Workington

Scunthorpe Scrorpions vs Workington Comets

ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions know they must register a high score against the Workington Comets in their final qualifying meeting in the Northern Section of the BSN Series at the Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway tomorrow evening (Friday, May 1) at 7.30pm.

The three group winners progress of the BSN Series progress to the semis, along with the highest-scoring runners-up. Scorpions were given a boost when Oxford failed to take an aggregate point at Poole on Wednesday and ended up as runners-up in the Southern Section on four points.

Scunthorpe lost by 41-49 at Workington a couple of weekends ago, and if they take all three points – including the aggregate bonus point – they would finish on five points. But there is a situation where all three teams in the Northern Group could finish on five points, plus the Scottish Section to take into account, so the more points that Scorpions score, the better.

Scorpions are due to be at full strength, while Comets bring in Jake Mulford and Sam Hagon for the injured pair of Niklas Holm Jakobsen and Vinnie Foord. Max Perry makes his debut for Workington, replacing the released Jamie Etherington.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey says: “To make progress, we know we need to win, take the aggregate bonus point and run up as big a points total as we possibly can and then hope other results fall favourably for us, which could take us into the semis as the best group runner-up.

“Our last two results have been pleasing, with a ten-point home win over Poole, plus a battling performance at Workington.

“Looking at the riders lined-up for Friday, it’s going to be a great night of speedway, and I hope our supporters turn up in numbers to get behind the lads as we seek to gain the result that we need.”

Accompanied children are FREE for the meeting, while there will also be a kids race during the evening.
