ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions can mathematically cement their place in the Cab Direct Championship play-offs, with a win over rivals Edinburgh Monarchs at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway tomorrow evening (Friday, August 28) at 7.30pm. It is the final regular league match of the 2026 season at the EWR.

Fourth-placed Scunthorpe are almost certain to progress to the play-offs. For Redcar to pip them to fourth place, not only would it take Bears to win both their remaining meetings – and Scorpions to lose both of theirs – but also a major shift in race points difference.

There is also an aggregate bonus point up for grabs against Edinburgh, since the corresponding meeting in Scotland on June 12 was drawn 45-45. Whoever wins at the Eddie Wright Raceway will pick up three league points.

Poole made sure of top spot in the table with victory over Plymouth on Wednesday night and Pirates meet whoever finishes fourth in the play-off semi-finals. Scunthorpe’s aim is to finish second or third in the final table, which would result in meeting either Glasgow or Edinburgh in the semi-finals.

Both Scunthorpe and Edinburgh are due to be at full strength for the important clash.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey says: “The meeting against Edinburgh promises to be another highly entertaining match at the Eddie Wright Raceway.

“Last week’s 50-40 home victory over Workington certainly helped sharpen us up around the EWR. Comets have plenty of riders who can ride our track, so it was backs against the wall to get the result we needed.

“As a team, we move onto another ‘biggie’ against Edinburgh. The Monarchs have already qualified for the play-offs, along with Poole and Glasgow, and while we are not there mathematically just yet, it will take something extraordinary for us not to make the cut.

“But it’s not just about finishing in the top four. While Poole have finished top, ourselves, Edinburgh and Glasgow could finish in any order in second, third and fourth. We want to finish as high as possible to give us the best possible chance in the play-offs.

“We’re going to be highly motivated for the meeting, and Edinburgh will be as well. It’s now the business end of the season and every meeting is crucial. These two teams could meet again in the play-offs, and we both want to put one over the other. It’s going to be a tough meeting, but if our supporters turn up in force and get behind Josh Pickering and the boys, I know we can get the job done.”

Accompanied children are FREE for the meeting, while there will also be a kids race during the evening.
