ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions are looking to take a major step towards the Cab Direct Championship play-offs, by taking victory over the Workington Comets at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway tomorrow evening (Friday, August 21) at 7.30pm.
It’s the first home fixture for Scunthorpe in a month, who currently sit in the fourth and final qualifying position for the play-offs.
Scorpions hand a home debut to recent signing Jacob Hook, who has come in to replace the injured Dan Gilkes. Hook rode for Workington last year and is likely to want to show Comets what they are missing.
Workington are currently at the bottom of the Cab Direct Championship table, but cannot be under-estimated. They won a BSN Series encounter at the Eddie Wright Raceway in May and also won at Oxford in the Championship just last week.
Skipper and No 1 Josh Pickering returns to action for Scunthorpe, having missed last week’s defeat at league leaders Poole through injury.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey says: “After a month’s break at home, we are back at it at the Eddie Wirght Raceway with a crucial match against Workington on Friday that will go a long way towards determining our finishing position in the final table and whether we make the play-off cut or not.
“With only three matches to go, we now know that wins in our final two home meetings against Workington this week and Edinburgh next Friday will confirm our play-off place, which will be a big achievement in itself considering how our chances were rated at the start of the season.
“Not only that, we would also be in a stronger position to finish second or third above either Glasgow or Edinburgh, or both, and that would most likely mean avoiding Poole in the semi-finals, which I’m sure would be everyone’s preference.
“First things first, though, we need to make sure we are in the play-offs and that means we can afford no slip-ups against Workington. There cannot be any complacency because Comets are the only away team to have won here this season after turning us over at the beginning of May in the BSN Series.
“But if we’re at our best with our loyal fans behind us, I cannot see why we cannot pick all three points – including the aggregate bonus point – on Friday evening. Every home meeting is not to be missed from this point onwards.”
Accompanied children are FREE for the meeting, while there will also be a kids race during the evening.
