BIG MATCH PREVIEW: Scunthorpe v Oxford

Scunthorpe Scorpions vs Oxford Cheetahs

ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions are looking to continue their excellent home form against the Oxford Cheetahs at the Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway tomorrow evening (Friday, July 10) at 7.30pm.

A victory would take Scorpions to the top of the Cab Direct Championship table, as well as taking them one step closer to the end-of season play-offs.

Scunthorpe are due to be at full strength, while Oxford bring in Sam Hagon as a guest for Mitch McDiarmid, who is riding in the SGP2 (World Under-21 Championship) in Sweden.

Scorpions move into the meeting with plenty of confidence, after a 57-33 home victory over Plymouth last Friday.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey says: “We need to be looking at scoring 50-plus against Oxford at the Eddie Wright Raceway, to put us in a strong position for the aggregate bonus point when we visit their place in August.

“At the moment, we’re performing across the whole team. At No 1, Josh Pickering has still not had a last or an exclusion all season. His record is quite incredible and he is by far and away the best rider in the league which is really contributing towards our success this year.

“At the other end of the team, the reserves have been contributing well, which is very encouraging. Ryan Ingram seems to have gained real confidence around Scunny and if he has a good Heat 2, we know we’re onto a winner. Nathan Ablitt being at reserve and scoring well is also a bonus.

“Dan Gilkes didn’t have the best of nights last Friday and looked a bit tentative in his first two races, which is understandable as he has just had more time out because of injury. He got stuck in in his third race but we needed to cement the win and only gave him the three rides. When you have got an in-form reserve, you have got to use them.

“We’ve got seven riders all capable of contributing heavily, especially at home, and we need to keep up the momentum going against Oxford this week.”

Accompanied children are FREE for the meeting, while there will also be a kids race during the evening.
