ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions can move to the top of the Cab Direct Championship with a home victory over Oxford Cheetahs at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening (July 10) at 7.30pm.
Scunthorpe went into second place in the table with a 57-33 win over Plymouth Gladiators at the EWR last Friday. As well as hosting Oxford this Friday, Scorpions are also in action at home against Poole (July 17) and Redcar (July 24) on the following two Fridays during the current calendar month.
Scunthorpe were not amongst the fancied teams at the start of the season. While not all sides have currently ridden the same number of fixtures, Scorpions are still well set for a place in the top four and the end-of-season play-offs which decide the league championship.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey commented: “We have taken two bonus points out of two so far and if we can get the bonus against Edinburgh, Redcar and Workington, that’s five. I’m optimistic about getting the bonus from Oxford so if we can manage that, we’ll be in a very strong position for the play-offs if we keep winning our home matches.
“Whoever thought we’d be in this position come July! There were plenty people who wrote us off at the start of the season and has us down as bankers for the wooden spoon.
“I remember one comment online saying we had one heat leader, one second string and five reserves, but I think the boys are proving otherwise. Those supposed ‘five reserves’ have done a job, haven’t they! Fair play to this team, they are proving a lot of people wrong.”
