RYAN INGRAM THE HERO, AS SCORPIONS DEFEAT POOLE PIRATES AT THE EDDIE WRIGHT RACEWAY
SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS 50 POOLE PIRATES 40 (MAXiCab Knockout Cup, first round, second leg)
ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions inflicted the first defeat of the season on Poole Pirates, winning 50-40 at the Eddie Wright Raceway in the MAXiCab Knockout Cup last night (Friday), although it was Pirates who progressed to the quarter-finals after winning 101-79 on aggregate.
Scorpions took a 4-2 from Heat 1, followed by a 5-1 from Simon Lambert and Ryan Ingram in Heat 2.
Heat 3 seemed to have finished as a 5-1 to Pirates, but Fraser Bowes was chucked out was warming his tyre prior to the race. Bizarrely the race was fully re-run with a reserve substitute allowed for the excluded Bowes and eventually ended as a 4-2 to Pirates.
Pirates also took a 5-1 from Heat 4 which levelled the scores at 12-12. Following their 61-29 at Poole on Wednesday, it was obvious that Pirates would win on aggregate and it all became about who won on the evening.
Poole led 32-28 after ten heats, but a grandstand finish for Scorpions started with a 5-1 for Michael Palm Toft and Lambert in Heat 11, after Poole No 1 Richard Lawson had crashed out of the race.
The race of the evening came in Heat 12. A stellar opening lap saw Ingram move to the front and the 16-year-old led home Lewis Kerr for his first race win at this level. Meanwhile, Luke Harrison and William Cairns seemed to pass each other on every bend for third place and Harrison eventually took the verdict, as Scorpions moved ahead with a 4-2. Ingram was given the bumps as he returned to the pits following the race.
Scorpions clinched victory with another couple of 4-2s, with skipper Josh Pickering somehow staying on board in Heat 13, despite rearing and being on one wheel for almost all the back straight of the second lap. Pickering recovered by taking third place from Lawson.
Pickering (12) and Palm Toft (11+1) took a concluding 5-1, as Scorpions won convincingly on the night by 10 points.
Ingram scored 6+1 in just his fourth meeting at this level. The 16-year-old said: “It was a really good night for myself and the team.
“I was building in speed every race and it’s nice to get my first Cab Direct Championship win. I can’t thank everyone enough for their continued support.”
SCUNTHORPE 50: Josh Pickering 12, Michael Palm Toft 11+1, Simon Lambert 8+1, Ryan Ingram 6+1, Connor Mountain 5+1, Nathan Ablitt 5+1, Luke Harrison 3.
POOLE 40: Zach Cook 10+1, Lewis Kerr 9+1, William Cairns 6+1, Cooper Rushen 6+1, Richard Lawson 5, Kyle Newman 2+1, Fraser Bowes 2.
