Scunthorpe Speedway | Speedway & Stockcars | Eddie Wright Raceway
ELLIE ROSE TRAVEL Scunthorpe Scorpions want a positive start to their season – and their BSN Series campaign – when they host current holders Redcar Bears in a mouth-watering opening fixture of the 2026 season at Scunthorpe’s Eddie Wright Raceway tomorrow afternoon (Sunday, March 22) at 3pm.
Redcar won the competition last October, after beating Poole Pirates in the final. In 2024, Scorpions reached the final, but lost to Pirates. The two teams join Workington in the northern section. The group winners progress directly to the semi-finals, while the best-scoring runners-up across the three groups will also progress.
The meeting is the first official fixture of the 2026 British Speedway season, and marks the debut of new No 1 and skipper Josh Pickering (pictured) for Scorpions. New-look Scorpions also give 16-year-old Ryan Ingram first-ever opportunity at Cab Direct Championship level.
Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “It’s the first official team meeting of the year in Britain so hopefully we attract a bit of attention and a decent crowd to get the ball rolling. The weather looks alright, and it’s always a top-notch meeting between Scorpions and Redcar at the Eddie Wright Raceway.
“Both sides have shined in the BSN Series in the last couple of seasons. The Ellie Rose Travel Scorpions reached the final in 2024 and then Redcar won it last season.
“We have two brand new signings in Josh Pickering and Ryan Ingram, and we also welcome back former Scorpions Michael Palm Toft and Nathan Ablitt to join Luke Harrison, Connor Mountain and Simon Lambert.
“People have said to me in the past, ‘we need Josh Pickering here at Scunny’ and now he is, so let’s support him because he will be Mr Entertainment. Josh loves our track and we know now we have a rider capable of winning the big races in Heats 13 and 15.
“Tofty taught us a lesson when he came back with Edinburgh last year. He loves our track, so with a likely combination of Pickering and Palm Toft in Heats 13 and 15, we have two riders who can win those races at Scunny.
“We’ve pegged our admission prices to the same as last season and we will aim to serve up a cracking season of action for the paying public.”
Bears have one injury doubt after their skipper Charles Wright crashed in the concluding race in a challenge match at Redcar on Friday.
Accompanied children (aged 0-16) are FREE, while there will be free whistles for the first 50 kids. As per last season, there will also be a kids race during the afternoon.
